THE PERFECT DAY

The Perfect Day

                                            by Hector Alfaro

On the perfect day, July 7, 2007 (7-7-7), many were getting married, creating special memories, beginning a new life and those that were born on that date will forever boast that they were born on the perfect day.

On that perfect day, I had my first stroke; my diagnosis revealed I have an inoperable Cavernous Angionoma which caused a cerebral hemorrhage located deep in my brain. The prognosis was even worse, the words of one doctor were: “you are guaranteed to have another and then we will have to operate…causing losses of some or all of your memory and/or losses of some or all of your motor functions”. Per that doctor, I am expected to have another stroke any day now or possibly within six months, or a year or two, or if I live in a perfect environment, the Cavernoma may not erupt for 5, 10, or 20 years. After two hospital stays, three visits to the emergency room, I am coping with some physical and psychological issues which for the most part are under control although I have a ticking time bomb in my brain. Now what?

On that perfect day, I too began a new life. My view on life has changed. I now live as if I were dying. With the support of his three beautiful daughters; Emily is 15, Melissa is 12, and Lyndsey is 4 years old, I am able to cope and enjoy life. This eye-opening experience has given me another chance to improve and make a difference in other people’s lives. The most important of which are my daughters, my wife, and my family (Mi Familia).

With God’s help my hope for the future is marvelous. Nonetheless, thanks to my current team of doctors, medical staff, therapists, and counselors I have the guidance to live healthier, a positive outlook on beating my Cavernoma, and I plan to live a very long life. I will win.

Now I am part of Team in Training (TNT) and with their assistance I will achieve a goal many have dreamed of achieving. I will be participating in the 9th Annual Toyota Desert International and Sprint Triathlon on April 20, 2008 in Palm Springs, CA. Yes, you read correctly, Triathlon. Who would of thought?

With the support of my God, Mi Familia, my friends, doctors, medical staff, therapists, counselors, and TNT I am going to be a lean, mean, swimming, riding, and running machine.
